Komori Corporation (Sumida-ku, Tokyo; President and CEO: Satoshi Mochida) hereby announces that it will strengthen the development of thin film coating technology for the mass production of perovskite solar cells.
In its Printed Electronics (PE) business, Komori is developing high-precision thin film coating technologies for the mass production of perovskite solar cells, which are seen as next-generation renewable energy technologies.
Perovskite solar cells are expected to be next-generation solar cells due to their high efficiency, low cost, light weight, and flexibility. However, stable manufacturing technologies are essential for commercialization. In particular, achieving high-speed, high-precision formation of ultra-thin, uniform films over large areas remains a significant challenge.
By utilizing its expertise in precision printing, Komori is seeking to overcome this challenge by establishing relevant technologies. In the third and fourth quarters of this year, the company will expand trial production at its PE Elemental Technology Development Center (PEDEC), making it compatible with three coating methods: slit die coating, roll coating, and screen printing. The introduction of two types of dryers will also enable the validation of more advanced processing conditions. As a result, an environment will be established that enables prototyping and evaluation tailored to diverse needs, allowing a response to a wide range of customer testing requirements. Looking ahead, PEDEC will serve as a platform for open innovation, making its facilities available to partner companies.
In addition, Seria Corporation, a Komori subsidiary that possesses advanced technologies for developing equipment used in flexible electronics, has conducted joint research with the Yamagata University Organic Electronics Innovation Center (INOEL) for over a decade. With strengths in high-precision printing through precision screen printing and low-tension transport technologies, Seria has developed thin-film coating technologies capable of forming uniform coatings on thin glass and film substrates. In addition to infrared drying, the company is also working to optimize perovskite solar cell manufacturing processes through coating technologies implemented in vacuum chambers and gloveboxes.
Seria’s technological prowess was also recognized in the 2019 demonstration study by Yamagata University on flexible organic thin-film solar cells using printing methods, where Seria’s equipment was utilized in the research.
Komori is advancing open innovation and working toward commercializing thin-film coating systems for perovskite solar cells, taking significant steps toward mass production. By accelerating the industrialization of third-generation organic solar cells, including perovskite solar cells, Komori aims to contribute to a more sustainable society.
